Veil Nebula Complex in SHO
The Veil Nebula is a massive cloud of heated and ionized gas and dust in Cygnus. It is almost the entire visible portion of the Cygnus Loop, a large but relatively faint supernova remnant.
The source supernova exploded about 5,000 - 8,000 years ago, and the remnants have been expanding to about 6 times the diameter of the full moon.
The distance to the veil nebula can’t be accurately measured but the (FUSE) data supports a distance of about 1,470 light-years.
The image presented here is a narrowband image taken using HA, SII and OIII filters. HA is presented as green, SII is presented as red and OIII is presented as blue resulting in this false color imaged commonly referred to as the Hubble pallet or SHO.
